$2.1M Awarded in Medical Malpractice Suit of VA Medical Center

For nearly a decade, Wilma Coolidge sought justice for her late brother. Only 64, Howard Southard, a U.S. Army veteran and former long-haul trucker, spent nearly four months in intensive care at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo before dying there. Coolidge blamed his doctors and sued for medical malpractice.

Last week, nearly 10 years after she first filed suit, a federal judge awarded her $2.1 million.

At the crux of Coolidge’s case is her contention that VA surgeons improperly installed a stent graft in one of Southard’s arteries, causing an irreparable loss of blood flow to his kidneys and eventually his death. She also accused the medical center of neglecting her brother’s pain and, in court papers, compared his last few months alive to being imprisoned in a hospital bed.
