City of Columbus, Ohio Sues Kia, Hyundai Over Increase of Car Thefts

The city of Columbus has filed a lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai for $75,000 over the costs accrued by its Division of Police to deal with soaring rates of vehicle thefts of certain Kia and Hyundai models since January 2022.

“The taxpayer cost of Kia and Hyundai’s negligence continues to rise as local law enforcement diverts limited resources to investigate thefts, respond to crimes and assess property destruction,” Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein said in a statement. “It’s time we held these automakers accountable for cheating consumers and passing the buck and responsibility to clean up the mess they made onto the rest of us.”

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in Columbus. The city is asking to have Kia and Hyundai alleviate the cost of damages sustained as Columbus police have to respond to soaring thefts, according to the lawsuit.
