After car swallowed by a sinkhole, she gets $4M settlement

A woman who said she sustained serious injuries when her car was swallowed by a 20-foot sinkhole in Los Angeles reached a $4 million settlement with the city after accusing it of sewer maintenance neglect in a lawsuit.

Stephanie Scott, a makeup artist, suffered brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder after she escaped from the sinkhole by pulling herself from her flipped SUV, according to her lawyers. She received help from fire rescue workers as the crater filled with raw sewage in February 2017.

After the incident, city’s department of public works said in a statement that the gaping sinkhole “was probably caused by a combination of excessive rain and a possible sewer failure,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
