Bucks County Pays $10M not $68M in Prison Lawsuit

Bucks County will save more than $50 million under a settlement agreement that would reduce a $68 million damage award against the county for violating the privacy of thousands of former prison inmates.

Under the proposal submitted for consideration on Tuesday in the U.S. Eastern District Court in Philadelphia, Bucks County taxpayers would still be required to pay up to $14 million in obligations and legal fees to end the near seven-year class action suit brought over its Inmate LookUp Tool.

The county, which does not admit liability in the agreement, could pay as little as $7.5 million in claims and legal fees under the agreement, which is subject to approval by U.S. District Judge Wendy Beetlestone, who oversaw the civil case.
