Despite acquittal, man still liable for $10M for murdering mother

Despite a not-guilty criminal verdict in the murder of Shirley Carter, her son is still responsible for a $10 million civil judgment following an order by an Iowa judge. In December 2017, the civil jury found Jason Carter was responsible for the death of his mother in 2015.

Carter’s defense team had asked Marion County Judge Martha Mertz to vacate the judgment after Jason Carter was found not-guilty in March of Murder in the First Degree. Judge Mertz denied Carter a new trial in the civil case, citing an abundance of “hearsay evidence” that would have been deemed inadmissible.
