Charity director’s embezzlement started when he was mayor

Guy Thompson devised a calculated, fraudulent scheme to embezzle hundreds of thousands of dollars meant for charity over a seven-year period while serving as executive director of United Way of Santa Rosa County, according to newly released court documents that shed light on the ex-politician’s downfall.

Thompson, who was the longtime mayor of Milton when the embezzlement began, pleaded guilty last week to 20 counts of wire fraud and three counts of tax evasion. He is awaiting sentencing.
