Judge Rules Controversial Supervised Injection Sites Legal

U.S. District Judge Gerald McHugh has ruled that nonprofit Safehouse’s plan to allow people to bring and use drugs within a medical facility to combat fatal overdoses does not violate the Controlled Substances Act.

The Justice Department called the plan “in your face illegal activity” and prosecutors sued to block the site.

The judge’s decision means the country’s first supervised injection site, and what advocates call an “overdose prevention site,” can move forward.

Advocates claim the sites will reduce drug use and prevent overdose deaths.
