Judge weighs $11.15M settlement for hospital pensioners

A federal judge in Providence, RI, weighed a multi-million dollar settlement and 35 current and former nurses and hospital workers from St. Joseph’s and Fatima hospitals, took a bus to court. Many were wearing bright sweatshirts with the words “save our pension” written across their chests.

It’s been a roller coaster ride for nearly 2,500 pensioners in total, who two years ago, suddenly discovered the St. Joseph Health Services of RI retirement plan was grossly unfunded.

Lawsuits filed in state and federal court accuse California based company Prospect Medical Holdings Inc. and others, including the Providence Diocese, of hiding the true health of the poorly funded plan when they bought several Rhode Island hospitals in 2014, including St. Joseph’s and Roger Williams in Providence and Fatima in North Providence.
