U.S. Senate Delays Vote on Same-Sex Marriage Legislation Until After Midterm Elections

A bipartisan group of senators trying to pass same-sex marriage protection legislation on Thursday pushed a vote until after the election, a move they say increases their chances of success but avoids forcing the GOP on record before the midterms.

The bill’s chief sponsor, Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), broke the news to reporters after a Democratic caucus lunch. Earlier in the day, the group of five senators leading talks on the bill recommended to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer that a vote occur after the election after several Republicans called for a delay.

“I’m still very confident that the bill will pass, but we will be taking the bill up later, after the election. We will be putting out a joint statement,” Baldwin said after a Democratic caucus lunch. The group is also expected to release their work clarifying safeguards for religious freedom later on Thursday.
