Pennsylvania Hospital Facing $2.4M Verdict Over Employee’s Negligence

Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley Health Network Inc. lost its second bid for a new trial in a case in which a jury found its employees’ negligence left a woman permanently disabled and confined to a wheelchair, a state appeals court said.

The suit was back in the Pennsylvania Superior Court for a decision regarding questions left unanswered after the state’s supreme court reversed the superior court’s prior decision awarding the health-care provider a new trial. 

The superior court previously said the hospital should get a new trial on damages because some of Betty Shiflett’s claims were time-barred. But the hospital waived the issue because it didn’t ask for an apportionment of damages between the claims, the supreme court said.
