The Bering Strait School District in Alaska settled a lawsuit by 13 girls who were sexually abused by a teacher over several years for $12.6 million
Young victims and their parents who testified at a court hearing in Nome Feb. 4 said the girls’ childhoods had been stolen when Bering Strait School District instructor Amos Oxereok sexually abused 13 girls over a number of years at their school in the northwest Alaska village of Wales.
Oxereok pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree Sex Abuse of a Minor Under Age 13 in Aug. 2017. “Almost all of this money will be locked up until the kids become adults,” the superintendent said. “The families wanted to dedicate it to the kids’ future.” The district has insurance.
