Does federal civil rights law prohibiting discrimination apply to LGBT people? That’s an issue the Supreme Court will decide this fall. The justices said today they’ll consider cases over people being fired because of their sexual orientation.
One of the cases is whether a funeral home employee could be fired after revealing that she was transitioning from male to female. Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination over sex, although it does not specifically address sexual orientation or transgender status.
