In a recent audit, it was found that all five Indian Health Services hospitals that were investigated gave patients opioids in amounts exceeding federal guidelines.
The Indian Health Service (IHS), which is a federal agency that provides primary care has focused more on the opioid epidemic and have agreed to make changes recommended by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The IHS has already begun by creating a new website and a committee focused on decreasing opioid overdose deaths.
The report claims that many problems involve straying from government guidelines and failure to get consent of patients or educate the patients.
Indian Health services says it has now implemented a tool to track dosages and all facilities are now reporting opioid data as of the first quarter of 2019.
