Lawsuit Filed Against a Washington D.C. Restaurant Alleges Years of Wage Theft, Worker Abuse

Swahili Village DC is being accused of systemically stealing wages and tips from employees in a lawsuit filed Wednesday by Washington, D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb.

After a pre-suit investigation, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is alleging that the Executive Officers of Swahili Village – Kevin Onyona and Emad Shoeb – engaged in egregious wage theft, paid many workers less than minimum wage, failed to pay overtime, failed to distribute tips and failed to provide legally required sick leave.

The lawsuit alleges that Onyona and Shoeb frequently paid servers as little as $5 per hour, including wages and tips.
