$4M Settlement Reached in Fatal 2016 Police Shooting in Milwaukee

The Milwaukee Common Council on Wednesday approved a $4 million settlement with the estate of Sylville Smith, whose death from a police shooting in 2016 set off days of demonstrations and unrest in the Sherman Park area.

The settlement was approved 14-1, with Ald. Mark Borkowski the lone vote against the measure.

With a trial looming in December, City Attorney Tearman Spencer brought the proposed settlement to the council in mid-October. That came one week after attorneys for the city and Smith’s estate told a federal judge that a second round of mediation was not successful.
