A Former National Ambassador Is Suing Pompeo and the U.S. Government for $1.8 Million in Legal Fees Related to Trump’s Impeachment

A U.S. ambassador who offered damaging testimony about then-President Donald Trump during congressional hearings in 2019 that led to Trump’s first impeachment is suing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the U.S. government to recover almost $1.8 million in legal fees.
Gordon Sondland, who was appointed by Trump as ambassador to the European Union and then fired after testifying against the then-president, claimed in the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington on Monday that Pompeo vowed that the government would pay the bills for legal advice Sondland received during the impeachment imbroglio.
“Pompeo assured Ambassador Sondland that the State Department would reimburse him for all of his legal costs; and through the fall of 2019, Pompeo and his staff continued to reaffirm his promise,” the 21-page complaint says.
