City in Connecticut Will Pay $4.5 Million to Family of Hospice Nurse Killed During 2020 Police Chase
The town has agreed to pay $4.5 million to the family of a town woman who was killed in a crash involving a stolen vehicle fleeing local police in 2020, officials said.
Elena Laspino, 58, a home hospice nurse and dog trainer, was rear-ended by a stolen SUV as she sat at a traffic light at the intersection of Hemingway Avenue and Main Street on the morning of May 7, 2020, police said. She died two days later.
A lawsuit filed by Laspino’s sisters claim East Haven police engaged in a high-speed pursuit of the stolen vehicle, leading to Laspino’s death. According to complaints filed in the case, the officers chased the stolen vehicle at speeds about 50 miles per hour over the posted limit — in violation of both the state’s and town’s pursuits policy.
