City of Baltimore to Receive $537 Million from Monsanto Over Water Contamination

The city of Baltimore announced that it will receive a portion of the $537.5 million settlement reached with the chemical manufacturer Monsanto and two associated companies.

The settlement is from a nationwide class-action lawsuit over Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) contamination in municipal water systems. PCBs are industrial chemicals that were used in electrical equipment and a wide range of other products from the 1930s until the 1970s, when they were banned by federal law.

The city originally filed its own lawsuit versus Monsanto in 2019 and obtained a ruling rejecting Monsanto’s attempt to dismiss the case in 2020. The cases against Monsanto, Solutia Inc. and Pharmacia LLC, were later combined into a single class-action lawsuit, with both Baltimore County and the city serving as representatives in this case.
