County in New Jersey Pays $1.5 Million in the ‘Tragic Death’ of a 12-Year-Old Boy
Bergen County has agreed to pay $1.5 million to the family of a 12-year-old boy who was fatally hit by a sheriff’s officer while crossing a busy highway in 2019.
Christian Tawadros, a student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Fair Lawn, was struck by the on-duty officer’s SUV as the boy, his brother and two other children tried to make it on foot across the multilane Route 208 at around 9 p.m.
The settlement follows a lawsuit by Tawadros’ family, which sued the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office in Superior Court for wrongful death. The suit charged Officer Michael Sansevere was driving in “an inattentive, careless, reckless and negligent manner” when he hit the boy while on patrol on April 14, 2019.
