Michigan Could Receive $800 Million in an Opioid Settlement

Michigan could receive nearly $800 million if a proposed settlement in a nationwide lawsuit against an opioid manufacturer and three distribution companies goes through, state Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Wednesday.

Seeking damages for the opioid crisis that has devastated the nation, more than 4,000 states and local governments filed suits in state and federal court against manufacturer Johnson & Johnson and drug distribution companies AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKessen. In the proposed $26 billion settlement, the distribution companies will pay up to $21 billion over 18 years. They also will provide information on where and how often drugs are being shipped.

Johnson & Johnson will pay up to $5 billion over nine years, with $3.9 billion in the first three years; it will also agree to stop selling opioids.
