Family of Middle Schooler Hit by Car While Boarding School Bus to Receive $52M Settlement

The family of a Stephen Mack Middle School student who was hit by a car while attempting to board a school bus accepts a $52 million settlement.

In January 2025, the student was hit when she crossed Latham Road to board the First Student’s transportation services the district uses, according to Winnebago County court documents.

Allen Pelton was driving a 2015 Chevrolet Cruze heading westbound on Latham Road. The school bus driver activated its lights, extended the yellow crossing arm and deployed the stop signal.
