Federal Judge Approves $6M Settlement in Class Action Against YouTube Over Unlawful Facial Data Collection

A federal judge granted final approval to a $6 million settlement in a class action against YouTube over claims that the video platform unlawfully collected facial biometric data of users in Illinois.

Plaintiffs sued YouTube in 2022, claiming the platform’s “Face Blur” and “Thumbnail Generator” tools collected the facial biometrics of users who uploaded videos to the site. They argued the tools violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act by collecting biometrics without proper disclosure and consent of users.
