Former Transgender Employee Sues Publix Over Series of Humiliating Episodes

A transgender woman who worked at a Publix in downtown Miami is suing her former employer over a series of humiliating episodes that sent her to a mental hospital last year.

The employee, whose only name listed in the lawsuit was her pre-transition name, said that she was hired as a cashier in June 2018, according to legal papers obtained by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

After a series of incidents over the next few months, she said she was repeatedly targeted by her managers and coworkers.

Among the complaints listed in the lawsuit, the woman claims that she was told she couldn’t wear any makeup, and she was instructed to cut her hair to fit the grocery store’s male uniform policy — even though her managers knew she identified as female prior to her hiring.
