Iowa State Board Approves $4.5M Settlement in Woman’s Death Following Hysterectomy

A 31-year-old Iowa City woman who went to the University of Iowa Health Care for a hysterectomy in May 2022 never returned home because she suffered a cardiac arrest, anoxic brain injury and died at the hospital.
Jennifer Kennedy had just graduated and received her nursing doctorate degree earlier that month. She had been hired as a nurse practitioner with Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids to start her new career soon after what should have been a fairly routine surgery to eliminate uterine fibroids.
