Laborer Settles For $24,750,000 After Being Seriously Injured on the Job

On February 3, 2019, Mr. Ruben Ortiz was a laborer at the defendant’s gas main construction project. He was injured when a steel plate slid and fell a distance of about one foot from a stack of plates nearby and struck his legs. Mr. Ortiz suffered career ending injuries to his legs. The claim was brought pursuant to New York’s Labor Law Section 240(1) against the owner of the project, defendant National Grid. The case settled for $24,750,000 at the time of jury selection. Christopher Holbrook, of Schwartzapfel Law Firm, represented Mr. Ortiz during this matter.
