Memphis Grizzlies Sued for Unlawful Termination and Discrimination Over Allegedly Replacing All-Black Security Team with White Officers

A new lawsuit claims the Memphis Grizzlies have been replacing their Black security officers with white officers, court documents show.

A former Memphis police and security officer for the Grizzlies is suing for wrongful termination based on his age and race. In his lawsuit filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court of Western Tennessee, he claims he was fired in 2023 and passed up for a promotion by a “young” white man.

The man, identified as Godfrey Howard, claims he had never been disciplined or written up for anything. The lawsuit alleges the phasing out of Black officers has been going on since the new director of team security was hired in late 2023.
