Mother Sues City of Portland, Oregon After Fallen Lamppost Fractures Child’s Skull, Jaw, and Leg

The mother of a child who was struck by a falling concrete lamppost that couldn’t support the weight of a hammock holding the child has filed a $500,000 lawsuit against the city of Portland and the hammock’s manufacturer.

The suit filed Tuesday in Multnomah County Circuit Court is the second to accuse the city of negligence in the incident.

The child, who is now 11, was with a babysitter in June 2022 when the sitter strapped the ends of the hammock to a tree and a lamppost at Irving Park in Northeast Portland, according to the suit. The lamp post toppled onto them, pinning the child for more than 10 minutes, according to the suit.
