New Mexico State Prison System to Pay $2.4M in Case of Woman’s Suicide in 2022

The state prison system and two private contractors have agreed to pay $2.4 million to settle a lawsuit brought on behalf of the children of a 36-year-old woman who died by suicide in prison in 2022, where she was being held for safekeeping after attempting suicide in a county jail.
The state Department of Corrections will be responsible for paying half the settlement, while two contractors paid to provide medical and mental healthcare to women incarcerated at Western New Mexico Correctional Facility at the time of the woman’s death will be responsible for paying the other half between them.
