North Carolina Medical Group to Pay $8.8M Settlement in Urine Test Fraud Scheme

According to Attorney General Jeff Jackson, North Carolina-based Bethany Medical Center, P.A., and its founder have paid more than $8.8 million to settle a lawsuit to resolve allegations that they improperly billed government health programs for medically unnecessary urine drug tests.
State and federal authorities accused Bethany Medical Center of ordering monthly drug tests for patients receiving opioid therapy, regardless of individual need. AG Jackson’s office said the center billed government programs for the tests, and then failed to use test results to treat patients.
