Ohio Jury Awards $4.25M in Wrongful Death and Negligence Lawsuit

A Stark County jury has awarded $4.25 million to a widower who filed a medical negligence and wrongful death lawsuit against former Mercy Medical Center doctor Shyam Bhakta.

Amber Ohler, a 43-year-old Dennison resident, died in November 2018 after Bhakta cut the inner wall of her artery during a catheter procedure to check for heart disease, said her husband’s attorney Jim Casey. Another doctor tried to open the resulting artery blockage, but Bhakta failed to put Ohler on a heart support pump within the hour that followed.

“We need our doctors to step up in a case of emergency, and he didn’t,” Casey said. “He just stepped back and thought that somebody else would fix it.”
