Parent Files Lawsuit Against Schools System Over Mask Mandate

The parent of a Manchester Community Schools student is suing the district, alleging its enforcement of the county health department’s K-12 mask mandate is a violation of his daughter’s constitutional rights.

Parent James Stewart’s lawsuit alleges his daughter, Morrah, 17, and other Manchester High School students were treated harshly and unjustly after they entered the high school without masks on Sept. 7 in protest of a mask mandate issued by the Washtenaw County Health Department. The federal lawsuit was filed Monday, Oct. 11, in the U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan.

Located in the southwestern corner of Washtenaw County with an enrollment of about 800 students, Manchester Community Schools was the only district in the county that made wearing masks optional prior to the health department’s mandate.
