South Carolina County to Pay $3.8M to Settle Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Inmate Death Inside Detention Center

Richland County has agreed to pay $3.8 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit involving a 27-year-old man who died in 2022 after spending less than two weeks inside the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Lason Butler died following a traffic-related arrest. The lawsuit alleges Butler was in the middle of a mental health crisis and was housed in unsanitary conditions without running water and proper care. He was later found dead. An autopsy ruled his death as dehydration.
