State of Oregon to Pay $49M to Families of Inmates Who Caught COVID-19 While Incarcerated

The state of Oregon has agreed to pay $49 million to the families of inmates who died while in state custody during the COVID-19 pandemic and to the more than 5,000 people who contracted the virus while incarcerated.

The settlement agreement was filed on Wednesday afternoon and needs court approval before it’s finalized. United States Magistrate Judge Stacie F. Beckerman preliminarily approved the settlement on Thursday. Final approval was scheduled for October 2027.
