Tennessee AG Sues Chemical Manufacturers Over ‘Forever Chemicals’ Contaminating the State’s Waters
Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is suing more than 20 chemical manufacturers including 3M and DuPont that for years made and sold products containing types of “forever chemicals.” The suit alleges they knowingly concealed the risk posed by the chemicals to human health and the environment while continuing to profit from their sale.
Found in a type of foam called aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) used in firefighting training and emergency response at military facilities, airports and other locations, the chemicals have seeped into and contaminated surface, ground and drinking water far beyond safe levels across the state, according to the lawsuit, filed in May in Davidson County Circuit Court.
The state is seeking several types of relief, including monetary relief for damages and the cost to investigate and clean up contamination from PFAS, as well as an injunction prohibiting the defendants from taking any further actions that will “damage the state through the use of PFAS in any way.”
