Texas’ Plan To Arrest and Deport Migrants for Illegal Entry and How it Would Work
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A Texas law that would allow the state to arrest and deport people who enter the U.S. illegally is on hold for now while a federal appeals court considers it.
A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Wednesday in a lawsuit brought by the Department of Justice against Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest escalation to prevent illegal border crossings. The panel did not say when it might rule.
The U.S. Supreme Court allowed the law to take effect for hours Tuesday before the 5th Circuit issued an order preventing its enforcement.
The Justice Department says Texas is overstepping the federal government’s immigration authority. Texas argues it has a right to take action over what the governor has described as an “invasion” of migrants on the border.
