Ex-NFL Player Turned School Superintendent Alleges Racial Discrimination After Being Placed on Leave

A former NFL player turned Massachusetts superintendent, who was the recent target of racist inflammatory vandalism, filed a racial discrimination claim against the town of Wayland and the Wayland Public School district after a school committee placed him on paid administrative leave “without explanation” last week.

The Wayland School Committee placed Wayland Public Schools Superintendent Omar Easy on paid administrative leave on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Days following the suspension, on Friday, Feb. 10, Easy, working alongside the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination (MCAD), filed a discrimination suit against the town of Wayland, Wayland Public Schools and the Wayland School Committee for placing him on leave without reason and promoting a discriminatory work environment.

The Wayland School Committee has not responded to MassLive’s request for comment.

In January 2021, Easy assumed the role of Wayland’s first Black or person of color superintendent in the town’s history. Prior to his leadership position in Wayland Public Schools, Easy served as a senior administrator at Everett Public School for eight years. Before that, Easy played for the Kansas City Chiefs between 2002 and 2004 and retired with the Oakland Raiders in 2005.
