Apple Wins Appeal in Patent Dispute With Health-Monitoring Company Masimo

Apple has emerged victorious in the ongoing patent dispute with health-monitoring company Masimo. A U.S. appeals court upheld the decisions of the U.S. Patent Office tribunal to invalidate parts of about a dozen patents owned by Masimo. These patents are related to the use of light to measure biomarkers such as heart rates and blood-oxygen levels, which form the basis of Apple Watch technology.

The court affirmed that the relevant parts of Masimo’s patents were invalid due to earlier publications that disclosed the same inventions. Masimo had accused Apple of infringing on these patents and incorporating their technology into multiple Apple Watch models. However, the court ruled in favor of Apple, stating that the patents in question were no longer valid.

Despite this setback, Masimo’s lawsuit against Apple in a California federal court will continue. The company previously secured a victory when a U.S. International Trade Commission judge declared that Apple Watches infringe one of Masimo’s patents. The final decision from the ITC is expected in October and could potentially lead to an import ban on Apple Watches.
