A Pharmacy in Massachusetts Agrees to Pay $10 Million in Opioid Settlement

An Andover-based pharmacy agreed to pay $10 million in a lawsuit that claimed the company was overprescribing medication and selling dangerous drug combinations.

The Injured Workers Pharmacy (IWP) — the largest buyer of opioids among pharmacies in the country — agreed to pay $10 million to settle a lawsuit claiming the company violated the Controlled Substances Act by improperly filling prescriptions for controlled substances, including opioids, and submitting false claims for payment to the Department of Labor, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Massachusetts.

In a statement published by company CEO Michael Gavin, he claimed federal officials mischaracterized IWP as the largest buyer of opioids among pharmacies in the country.
