3M to Pay a Georgia City $75 Million to Settle a PFAS Water Pollution Lawsuit

The 3M Company will pay $75 million to the City of Rome as part of the settlement of a lawsuit concerning the discharge of toxic PFAS and PFOAS chemicals into waterways.

The Minnesota-based chemical manufacturer has pledged to phase out production of PFAS by the end of 2025.

The lawsuit seeks to recoup some, or all, of the costs incurred by the city and water department customers to completely remove PFAS and PFOAS from drinking water. Funds from that lawsuit are required to go toward the construction of a reverse osmosis water filtration plant to remove the chemicals from Rome’s main drinking water supply, the Oostanaula River.
