Indiana Police Detective Sues Department, Alleges That Racial Discrimination Went Ignored

A Black Evansville police officer filed a federal lawsuit against his department last week, alleging he has endured years of discrimination based on his race and disability status.

Officer John Porter Jr., who joined the Evansville Police Department in 2014, accused colleagues of subjecting him to “harassment” throughout his time on the force due to his race and claims his superiors ignored concerns about racial discrimination, according to a complaint filed April 12 by Porter’s attorney in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana.

“Porter has been told he looked like a member of the rap group NWA, (that) he was a ‘thug with a badge’ or ‘thug’ on numerous occasions,” the complaint states. “Porter has complained of the harassment throughout his tenure, but was told the comments were just jokes.”
