Judge Approves a $6.5 Million Settlement Against a Private University in New York Over Remote Classes

A U.S. District Court judge signed off on a $6.5 million settlement in a class action lawsuit several Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute students filed against the school nearly four years ago.

The settlement finalized Jan. 9, ends the litigation started in spring 2020 by three students seeking refunds for tuition and fees they paid for classes in spring and summer semesters that were held remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hundreds of students have filed similar breach of contract lawsuits against colleges and universities across the country, according to States Newsroom, a national nonprofit news organization.
