Man Arrested, Accused of Shooting LSU Student On-Campus

A man accused of shooting an LSU student during a botched robbery attempt outside a dorm was arrested Wednesday, weeks after police identified him as the attacker.

Clarence Hypolite, 19, was arrested on charges of attempted armed robbery and attempted murder in the Aug. 19 shooting. Hypolite allegedly met the victim days before the mugging during LSU’s “Welcome Week,” an orientation period for its newest class of freshman students.

The victim told police he was walking by West Laville Hall around 11:30 p.m. when Hypolite approached him and struck up a conversation. The victim went on to say that after his friends pulled up in a car alongside them, Hypolite asked if he could charge his phone in their vehicle.
