University of Iowa Health Care to Pay $4M in Patient Brain Injury Lawsuit

The University of Iowa Health Care will pay $4.16 million to settle a lawsuit after a patient suffered a brain injury in the emergency department, according to the Des Moines Register.

The lawsuit filed in 2024 involved 38-year-old Conrad Columbo, who had a history of bipolar and schizoaffective disorder.

In 2022, UIHC placed him in a hallway for about 14 hours due to a lack of psychiatric beds. Columbo told hospital staff that he just got released from jail that morning and went multiple days without sleep or prescription medications.
