Arizona AG Announces a $13 Million Settlement Against the State’s Largest Cable Provider Over Deceptive Pricing

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office has announced a $13 million settlement against Arizona’s largest cable provider, Cox Communications, over deceptive pricing for TV and landline customers.

State officials announced early Thursday morning that the cable provider failed to “adequately disclose additional fees to customers” who had believed they had a “price-lock guarantee” or other fixed pricing deals. Attorney General Kris Mayes says that between January 2014 and March 2021, Cox regularly raised bill prices through the Broadcast Surcharge Fee (“BSF”) and Regional Sports Surcharge (“RSS”). Another surcharge that the state says wasn’t disclosed to Arizonans was the “Carrier Cost Recovery Fee (”CCRF”) for landline subscribers.

According to the AG’s office, those surcharges were deceptive price increases that appeared to look like tax or government fees in Cox’s advertising and billing statements by listing them alongside “government taxes, fees, and surcharges.” The cable company denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement. It’s important to note that only $3 million will be going to customers as approximately $10 million will be going to the state attorney general’s statutory fund.
