Ohio Family Awarded $787 Million After Toddler is Killed By Bunk Bed Ladder

The family of Jasyiah Boone, represented by Dan Mordarski, asked for $522 million in compensatory and punitive damages against Moash Enterprise Company Limited, a foreign furniture manufacturer that sells products on Wayfair and other e-commerce platforms. In 2018, two-year-old Jasyiah Boone of Columbus, Ohio, died from positional asphyxiation after being trapped in a bunk bed ladder that created an opening between the top rung of the ladder and the bottom of the upper bed frame creating an “entrapment hazard.”

In December 2017, Jasyiah’s mother purchased a Fremont Twin-Over-Twin Bunk Bed by Angel Line on Wayfair.com. The bunk bed, manufactured by Vietnamese company Moash Enterprise Company Limited, contained a ladder that created an opening between the top rung of the ladder and the bottom of the upper bed frame. On May 22, 2018, Jasyiah’s feet slipped into this opening, and his torso became entrapped, prohibiting his lungs to function. The coroner determined he died from positional asphyxiation.

The case was heard by Judge Michael Watson, United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. The jury deliberated for 1 hour and 20 minutes. The defendant declined to appear in court. The family has already settled with Wayfair and the importer, Longwood Forest Products Inc., for an undisclosed amount.

A six-person jury awarded the family of Jasyiah Boone one of the largest wrongful death verdict ever in the state of Ohio, totaling $787 million.

• $175 million compensatory
• $522 million punitive damages
• $90 million wrongful death
