The $27 Million Floyd Family Settlement is NOT Connected to the Chauvin Trial

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is on trial for the murder of George Floyd. After the jury selection process started in March, Minneapolis announced it had settled a lawsuit filed by Floyd’s family for a record of $27 million. A viewer asked why Minneapolis paid Floyd’s family before the criminal trial, and whether the two cases are connected.

The $27 million settlement of the civil suit is separate from the criminal case against Derek Chauvin.

Last month, the city settled with Floyd’s family for $27 million in the largest settlement ever paid by the city, according to the Floyd family’s attorney.

Rachel Moran, a law professor at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, said the settlement is not connected with the criminal case.
