A Pharmaceutical Executive Will Pay $5M to Settle an Opioid Lawsuit

A former pharmaceutical executive will pay $5 million to settle a lawsuit that claimed his company bribed health care professionals to write improper prescriptions for a powerful opioid, New Jersey authorities said Thursday.

Insys Therapeutics, Inc. founder John N. Kapoor, 77, of Phoenix, Arizona, was sentenced a year ago to federal prison for his role in feeding the nation’s opioid crisis.

Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal announced an anticipated $5 million settlement with Kapoor to resolve allegations that he unlawfully orchestrated the payment of bribes to New Jersey doctors as part of a nationwide kickback scheme to boost sales of the company’s flagship opioid drug Subsys.
