Teacher Files Federal Lawsuit Alleging Racial Discrimination After Being Fired Over Book Used in Class

A federal lawsuit accuses a Charlotte charter school of racial discrimination after firing a teacher over a book used in his seventh-grade English class.

The book “Dear Martin” was a New York Times best seller that tells the story of a teenage victim of racial profiling.

The teacher, Markayle Gray, says the school’s principal recommended the book but later told him some white parents complained the story was “divisive.”

Gray says the school fired him last February, and this week he filed a lawsuit.
